Hello Governor Mifflin families,

Today, we learned that a student at Cumru Elementary has tested positive for COVID-19 and in reviewing the circumstances of this specific case, we have made the decision to quarantine a classroom of students out of an abundance of caution.

Here are the facts regarding this case that are appropriate to share:

  • The student who tested positive for COVID-19 was last in school on Friday, September 25 and we were made aware of the positive test result today.
  • This student rides the bus.
  • This student also ate lunch in the cafeteria.
  • This student was part of an elementary classroom that was self-contained and not part of a larger cohort.
  • We have sent a separate phone call and email to individuals who will be required to quarantine for 14 days.

In following our protocols, our district administrators have reported this to the PA Department of Health and are following previous guidance. Our Operations Department has already begun deep cleaning the impacted classroom and any common areas and they will continue the cleaning process overnight. Cumru elementary will open on its normal schedule tomorrow, September 30, with the exception of the classroom that will remain on quarantine.

Please understand that as we continue to share news of positive cases with you that our response has not become routine. Our district prioritizes and treats as an emergency any report of a positive or presumed positive case of COVID-19 and we continue to act swiftly and evaluate the circumstances of each case to take preventative measures beyond recommendations. We continue to ask for equal monitoring and safety measures from each of our families and staff members and we are grateful for your support.

Sincerely,

Dr. Steve Gerhard
Superintendent
Governor Mifflin School District
