SWIMMING LESSONS

Registration:

Registration for the fall session will be held on Wednesday, August 27, 2008, from 6:30-8:00 p.m. at the Governor Mifflin Intermediate School Pool Lobby. Late registrations for any openings, following August 27, will be taken by calling G. John Hyneman, Aquatics Coordinator at (610) 775-5084 ext. 2. No early registration allowed. Registration is for residents of Governor Mifflin School District Only. Non-residents may call the pool office after August 27 for any openings. Cash or checks are accepted. Checks are to be made payable to Governor Mifflin School District.  To speed up the registration process, print out a copy of the emergency card and bring it along with you completed to the registration. One registration card per person. The following is a list of our programs offered this year:


PARENTS & TOTS  

Fee:   Resident  $20 per session; Non-resident $30 per session   

Offered Spring II only! This class requires the parent to go in the water with the child. Children under 48 inches tall are eligible. Children will progress at their own rate under a qualified instructor. The minimum age is six months. The maximum age is five years. Come to the spring registration to register.

BEGINNER SWIM LESSONS (Levels 1, 2, 3)

Fee: Resident  $30 per session; Non-resident $40 per session  

The American Red Cross Learn to Swim Curriculum is used for these classes. All classes are instructed by a certified water safety instructor. The beginner swimmer must be 48 inches tall for classes at GMIS. Some summer classes will be located at the Shillington outdoor pool. There is NO height requirement for these lessons. The minimum age is four years. Come to the season appropriate registration to register. The following guidelines may be used to determine the appropriate beginner level:

Fall: September 8 – October 8, 2008

Level 1 - Introduction to Water
Skills: Water exploration and adjustment; Ability to separate from parents

A-1 Monday & Wednesday, 6:30-7 p.m.
A-2 Monday & Wednesday, 7-7:30 p.m.

Level 2 - Fundamental Aquatic Skills (Must have passed Level 1)
Skills: Floating, kicking, arm movements on front; Floating, kicking, arm movements on back

B-1 Monday & Wednesday, 6:30-7 p.m.
B-2 Monday & Wednesday, 7-7:30 p.m.
B-3 Monday & Wednesday, 7:30-8 p.m.

Level 3 - Stroke Development  (Must have passed Level 2)
Skills: Coordinated strokes (front & back); Jump into deep water, treading, diving

C-1 Monday & Wednesday, 7-7:30 p.m.
C-2 Monday & Wednesday, 7:30-8 p.m.

ADVANCED SWIM LESSONS ( Levels 4, 5, 6)         

Fee: Resident  $30 per session; Non-resident $40 per session          

These classes are a continuation in the American Red Cross Learn to Swim Curriculum. All classes are instructed by a certified water safety instructor. Students will learn advanced skills and strokes such as sidestroke, breaststroke and butterfly. To enroll in an advanced course, the student must have successfully passed the previous course. Red Cross cards showing that the course was successfully completed should be shown at registration. Come to the season appropriate registration to register.

Level 4: Stroke Improvement  (Must have passed Level 3)

D-1 Monday & Wednesday, 6:30-7 p.m.

Level 5: Stroke Refinement  (Must have passed Level 4)

E-1 Monday & Wednesday, 7:30-8 p.m.

Level 6: Fitness Swimmer  (Must have passed Level 5)
Fundamentals of Diving  (Must have passed Level 5)
NOTE: Level 6 only offered in Spring II and Summer I, II and III

ADULT LEARN TO SWIM CLASSES                  

Fee: Resident  $50 per session; Non-resident $60 per session  

These classes are for adults interested in learning how to swim. The beginner class will work on fundamental aquatic skills. The intermediate class will work on stroke development. Both classes are instructed by a certified water safety instructor. Come to the season appropriate registration to register.

Beginner

F-1 Monday & Wednesday, 8:15-9 p.m.

Intermediate

G-1 Monday & Wednesday, 7:30-8:15 p.m.

COMPETITIVE SWIM CLASSES (Ages 10 & older)

Fee: Resident  $25 per session; Non-resident $35 per session  

The competitive swimming class involves conditioning in addition to stroke technique to tune up for summer swim team. Child must be a Level 4 swimmer or higher to participate. Come to the spring registration to register.

Spring: May 11 – May 28, 2009
Monday through Thursday, 3:30-4:30 p.m.
No Class on Memorial Day – May 25, 2009
