Step through the doors of Cumru Elementary School in Shillington, Pennsylvania, and you enter a dynamic child's world in which children are the center of all we do. Although our numbers are great, nearly 650 students in Kindergarten through fourth grade, the atmosphere is reflected by our mission statement to help "every child to grow, flourish and succeed." Caring staff members will help each child to grow in character, flourish in a safe and nurturing environment, and succeed in meeting high academic standards throughout their five-year stay at Cumru.
Cumru is an award winning school. It has received a Blue Ribbon Rating at the state level three times, and we are proud to report that Cumru was chosen as a recipient of a National Blue Ribbon for the 2000-2001 school year. This award which was given by the Department of Education in Washington, D.C. is a true testimony to the work of every staff member, parent, volunteer and child. Our reading program, our "Welcome Wagon" program for new students, our Cumru Handbook and our environmental area have also received awards of distinction. Every day is an adventure in learning. Cumru provides a comprehensive and challenging curriculum that fosters effective communication, creativity, critical thinking and problem solving. A balanced literary model is used to teach reading, utilizing the Harcourt Trophies Series. Whole group, small group and individualized instruction are all used to meet high standards. Other initiatives at Cumru include; the Writing Workshop; flexible guided reading groups; usage of the Daily 5 in Language Arts; a hands-on science program; an environmental habitat, the "Cumru Courtyard" that has been constructed and maintained by students; a new everyday mathematics called Common Core State Standards (CCSS); and the technology plan that has resulted in computers in every classroom and a computer lab for whole class use.
There is a strong community support in our school from parents, PTO, volunteers, and various businesses.
Cumru is not a building that stands alone. It is composed of students, parents, staff, community volunteers, and support personnel. The doors to our school open wide to embrace such a large family, and the resulting cooperative effort is our greatest strength.
