The K-6 Curriculum

The Harcourt Trophiesreading program has been implemented in all K-6 classrooms at Governor Mifflin. The program incorporates the areas of reading, writing, English and spelling and is fully aligned with the PA State Standards for Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening.

Trophies is a research-based, developmental reading/language arts program that includes the five components of reading: Phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Explicit phonics instruction, direct reading instruction; guided reading, phonemic awareness instruction; systematic, intervention strategies; integrated language arts components; and state-of-the art assessment tools ensure every student successfully learns to read.

The Trophiesprogram is divided into themes. Each theme is designed to help the student realize that they are a part of a large interdependent world. The themes help students develop a sense of responsibility for themselves, their communities, and their world. The six universal themes are:

  • Self-discovery
  • Working together
  • Growth and change
  • Creativity
  • Communities
  • Explorations

At Governor Mifflin, we understand that children become good readers by having many opportunities to read books, and they become good writers by having many opportunities to write. Since reading and writing are directly connected to language, children have daily opportunities to model and hear correct language.
