The following services are available to Cumru students. The services children receive depend upon the recommendations of the classroom teacher, parents or guardians, or the Instructional Support Team (involving the parents and teacher).
Classroom Guidance Lessons
Students in grades K–3 receive classroom guidance with the school counselor approximately twice a month. The guidance curriculum covers four major areas with lessons and activities in each area taught throughout their school year:
-
Educational Goals – listening, following directions, completing work, taking tests, doing one’s best.
-
Personal Health and Safety Goals – staying safe with drugs and alcohol, stranger safety, handling bullying.
-
Social/Emotional Goals – peer relationships, handling feelings, solving problems, being responsible in making choices.
-
Careers – school and community workers, thinking about one’s skills and interests.
Small Group Counseling
Students have the opportunity (with parental permission) to participate in small group counseling with the school counselor. The groups usually have 4–6 students and meet once a week for one-half hour. There are eight-week group sessions during the fall, winter, and spring. There are different groups, depending on the needs of the students:
-
Social Skills – addressing behavior and peer relations.
-
Self-Esteem – addressing how one feels about school and oneself.
-
Families in Transition (F.I.T.) – addressing issues of separation and divorce.
-
Grief and Loss (scheduled as needed).
-
Anger Management (scheduled as needed).
Individual Counseling
Some issues which children may be struggling with are dealt with more effectively on an individual basis. Students in need of individualized attention from the counselor receive individual counseling, with parental permission, one day per week or as needed.
The counselor is available for consultation with parents. Please feel free to contact the guidance office directly by calling 610-775-5081 and pressing option # 3. You may also leave a message on voice mail by dialing 610-603-2310, mailbox # 8539.
