The Curriculum
The Language Arts curriculum recognizes and addresses the connections between reading, writing, speaking, and listening. It is aligned with the PA State Standards for Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening. These standards are 1) Learning to Read Independently, 2) Reading Critically in All Content Areas, 3) Reading, Analyzing, and Interpreting Literature, 4) Types of Writing, 5) Quality of Writing, 6) Speaking and Listening, 7) Characteristics and Function of the English Language, and 8) Research.
Numerous learner objectives were written to address each of the eight standards. They progress from the simple to the complex across the grade levels. They are direct and explicit, indicating precisely what the students should be able to do at each grade level. The objectives also include the eligible content they will encounter on the PSSA in reading. The objectives are ongoing and may be addressed through instruction in the content areas.
Children spend time reading fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. A wide variety of materials is available to ensure that students are being adequately exposed to many genres of literature. Students are required to provide written responses to material they are reading as a means of demonstrating their comprehension, as well as sharpening their writing skills. The curriculum is delivered through differentiated instruction in order to address the literacy needs of each learner.
