SPECIAL EDUCATION
In accordance with state and federal regulations and standards, the GMSD District actively seeks to identify students who are eligible for special education. Classroom teachers, guidance counselors, reading specialists, school nurses, and speech clinicians conduct screenings to determine the needs of children who are thought to be exceptional. The entire staff, working in the Response to Intervention model, will monitor the progress of students and evaluate comprehensive assessments before recommending the multidisciplinary evaluation process. This process is conducted to determine a student’s eligibility for special education programs. Parental permission is required before any student evaluations can occur.
Parents who believe that their child is in need of either special education or gifted services may request that a multidisciplinary evaluation be conducted. The request must be in writing, addressed to the building principal, and should explain why the parents believe that an evaluation is necessary. Inquiries regarding special education may be directed to the Governor Mifflin School District Special Education Department at (610) 775 – 5085.
