 The Middle School curriculum for students in grades in 7 and 8 emphasizes goal setting, cooperation and self-discipline. Coursework includes English, reading and study skills, introduction to international languages, math, science, geography, physical education, history, health technology education, family & consumer sciences, fine arts, and computer literacy. Students receive instruction in international languages that include French and Spanish. Opportunities for learning through participation in clubs and intramural sports complement the curriculum.
Assessment and Progress Monitoring
The overall aim of assessment is to foster learning of worthwhile academic content for all students. School districts have a number of different assessments, in addition to the PSSA, that are used to determine student progress. These assessments are intended to be direct, frequent and directly related to academic standards. These assessments also create more opportunities to deliver the most effective and valuable instruction by providing information about how students are performing. In recognizing that the more data we have the better we can measure how well our students are achieving, the Governor Mifflin School District has implemented two additional assessments this school year. These include the 4Sight Benchmark Assessment and the Dynamic Indicator of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS). These assessments will be used to progress monitor our students throughout each school year. More information about the 4Sight and DIBELS assessments can be found below.
Progress monitoring is a scientifically-based practice that is used to assess students' academic performance and evaluate the effectiveness of instruction. Progress monitoring involves collecting and analyzing data to determine student progress toward specific skills or general outcomes and making instructional decisions based on the review and analysis of student data. Monitoring student progress through data collection and analysis is an effective way to determine if the classroom instruction is meeting the needs of the student and benefits all those involved in the education process.
