The Governor Mifflin Middle School English Language Arts program is designed to prepare students with the language skills they need to be successful in school and future careers.  Communication, the ability to read, comprehend, analyze, and make inferences from fiction and non-fiction selections, as well as writing with clarity, organization, purpose, etc. while using good language skills, remains the heart of the curriculum.  Computer technology plays a large role in developing children’s communication skills since one of the building’s computer labs functions primarily to support the writing process.  Students develop writing portfolios to show their progress from year to year, particularly in the development of critical thinking skills expressed through informational, persuasive, narrative, and descriptive/creative writing modes.

Some units which are integrated into the seventh and eighth grade English Language Arts program are historical fiction with a local flavor, focusing on Native Americans and the French and Indian War as well as the Victorians and World War II with its social implications of equality and tolerance; additional genres include biography, autobiography, short stories, poetry, horror, science fiction, fantasy, mythology, and research; the study of significant authors, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and career possibilities round out the curriculum.   Students have every opportunity to expand and develop their knowledge and understanding of the English language and to achieve excellence whether developing a research project, taking a test, or emerging into a career.
