Listed below are all of the Foreign Language classes available to Senior High students:
French 1, Spanish 1
These courses are suggested for those students who plan to enter college and for those who have a real desire to learn a foreign language. The students learn the basic skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing for the purpose of communication. Level I is the first step toward the acquisition of a basic vocabulary, an understanding of fundamental structures, the development of accurate pronunciation, and an acquaintance with the people and their culture. Emphasis will be placed on those materials, strategies and activities which will enhance the student's ability to function in the language. Oral and written assessments will be administered.
French 2, Spanish 2
These courses are recommended for those who have acquired an adequate foundation from the first-year course. Students in the second year of a language will continue practicing the communication functions introduced in Level I. Students will have many opportunities to practice the language in the four important skill areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing. The target language will be the primary language used in the classroom. Oral and written assessments will be administered. French 3, Spanish 3
The third year of a language is designed to continue to develop proficiency in all four skill areas of the language. Students will continue to increase their vocabulary, practice grammatical structures, and explore the literature, history, geography, art, and culture of the target language. Emphasis will be placed on those materials, strategies, and activities which will enhance the student's ability to function in all contexts within the language. The target language will be the primary language used in the classroom. Oral and written assessments will be administered. French 4, Spanish 4
The course continues its emphasis on proficiency in the four skill areas. Additional literature, history, art, culture, and geography will be introduced. Appropriate materials, strategies, activities and special projects will be used to enhance the learning process. The target language will be the primary language used in the classroom. Oral and written assessments will be administered. (PREREQUISITES : C in previous year of French/Spanish and department approval)
French 5, Spanish 5
The fifth year of a foreign language is made available on an independent basis to those students who have accelerated their study. Course content includes novels, poetry, plays, and current magazine and newspaper articles. Writing exercises are coordinated with the literature studies. A strong emphasis is placed on listening comprehension and vocabulary building to improve speaking proficiency. Advanced Placement materials are used. Movies, news programs and documentaries are viewed regularly in the target language. Additional history, art, geography, and culture may be introduced. The target language will be the primary language used in the classroom. *Not offered in 2007-2008
Latin 1
The Latin I course is suggested for those students who plan to enter college and especially for those who intend to pursue careers in the fields of science, medicine, and law. In Level I the fundamental concepts of Latin grammar are stressed. Students will amass an extensive Latin vocabulary during the year which will increase the students' understanding of English vocabulary through the study of derivatives from the Latin words. Students will also examine Roman culture, mythology, and history, as well as other ancient civilizations such as Greece.
Latin 2
This course focuses on the study of the Latin language in its more advanced forms. Students will learn to translate Latin texts with ease. Continued study of Roman culture and history is also included in the readings and through projects, i.e., a Julius Caesar project. (PREREQUISITES: C in previous year of Latin and department approval)
Latin 3
An advanced course in Latin prose is offered as Level 3. Students will be required to translate literature and examine the historical and legendary aspects of the periods studied. Units on mythology, funerals, dining, Greek language and philosophy may be included. Continued study of Latin vocabulary and grammar in translation will be stressed. (PREREQUISITES: C in previous year of Latin and department approval)
Latin 4
An advanced course in Latin poetry is offered as Level 4. Emphasis in translating myths and the Aeneid of Virgil, as well as the poetry and plays of later Latin authors, will be included. Units on mythology, drama, religious festivals, comedy, medieval Latin, and Greek may be included. Vocabulary and grammar in translation continue to be stressed.
