Cumru third and fourth graders all have the opportunity to play an instrument called the recorder as part of their normal general music class. This instrument which looks like a small plastic flute or clarinet allows students to practice actually reading and playing music rather than just talking about it. Due to the fact that this is a wind instrument which goes into an individual's mouth to play, it is necessary for each student to have his or her own instrument. Students are given the opportunity to purchase their own recorder at the beginning of the school year for around five dollars. Children who do not wish to purchase an instrument may borrow one from the school district at no charge.
