Hello Governor Mifflin families,

I am writing to inform you that the Governor Mifflin School District will close for a period of two weeks. We will resume classes on Monday, March 30, 2020, unless otherwise directed by local, state or federal mandates. This evening’s activities and practices will continue as usual, after which the shut down will take effect. This shutdown is a precautionary measure in response to the ongoing spread of the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19). As of the time of this email there are still no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Berks County. The decision to close our district was made after extensive deliberation and collaboration with our fellow Berks County school leaders and officials. Please know that this was not an easy decision, but given the information that we observed today from the state, federal and regional level, we believe this is the best option.

During this period, all schools events and activities, including athletic events and competitions will be postponed. Buildings will not be accessible to staff, students, or families during this time and only essential district personnel will be on campus.

While we believe the continuation of learning is very important, we have reached the conclusion that, in the event of a shut-down, no assignments will be graded nor will they be mandatory.  On Monday, March 16th, families will be able to find a list of educational resource links on our district webpage that, if families and students choose to do so, can be used to maintain student learning at home.

Throughout today, our district leadership team worked to navigate rapidly changing information regarding the spread of the coronavirus and we expect that we will continue to adjust our response based upon developing information. The decision to close our schools has a far reaching impact and was not taken lightly, but at this time and based upon the recommendations for social distancing and continued wellness, we join with our fellow Berks County districts in a countywide closure.

As we continue to navigate this unprecedented event, I will provide regular communication to you via Skylert to share new developments or changes to this plan. In the meantime, I appreciate your understanding and support during this time.

Sincerely,

Dr. Steve Gerhard
Superintendent, Governor Mifflin School District
