Hello Governor Mifflin families,

As a follow-up from Wednesday, Governor Wolf and the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) released a report that provides preliminary guidance for districts as we work through our planning for reopening for the 2020-2021 school year. According to the updated guidance, these preliminary guidelines are designed to address the health and safety considerations that districts need to review. This guidance is also specifically intended to assist in the development of a countywide Health and Safety Plan. PDE indicated that a template for that larger Health and Safety Plan will be available in the coming days and our leadership team will be reviewing that additional guidance regarding teaching and learning, student wellness, equity, and organized sports.

I understand that we would all like to have answers about what the start of the school year will entail for our students, families, and staff. Please know that this is the early stage of that planning. It is encouraging that the state guidance has come this early in the summer and will give us more time than expected to begin to tailor our planning appropriately to our district and six schools. We must remember that what we saw from the state this week are guidelines being recommended to the extent possible. Our work will be to develop appropriate solutions that fit the contextual needs of our schools, students, and staff.

It is also important to know that collectively, the 18 Berks County school districts, two Career and Technology Centers, and Berks County Intermediate Unit, are committed to the development of a countywide road map for reentry. The goal is to make collaborative decisions and protocols that are implemented consistently across Berks County schools. Reentry plans will be based on feedback from key stakeholders, as well as from federal, state, and local governing agencies. Once these plans have been drafted, they will be reviewed and finalized with our staff, school board members, and our greater Governor Mifflin community so that we are all informed.

Throughout the summer months, our Governor Mifflin leadership team will work collaboratively with our peers across the county with the shared goal of reopening our schools in a way that is healthy and safe, while also in compliance with guidance from governing agencies. I will continue to provide you with updates as this work moves forward.

Sincerely,

Dr. Steve Gerhard
Superintendent
Governor Mifflin School District
