Hello Governor Mifflin families,

I hope this email finds you well, enjoying the summer, and continuing to practice the health and safety recommendations that allowed our area to enter the more open “green” phase of this current pandemic. It is important that we recognize that our cautious behavior of the spring has led to the drop in COVID-19 cases this summer. For the sake of our kids and a return to school and some normalcy, we must continue to practice social distancing, proper hygiene, and wearing face masks, where needed, so that we can reopen this fall with greater confidence and comfort for all involved. This is a necessary, short-term practice that will hopefully lead to a speedier resolution and end to this pandemic.

As we continue to prepare for students to return in the fall, I want to provide you an update on a few key milestones in our summer work and phased reopening:

Today is a notable day in our reopening plan as our athletes have returned to campus for voluntary workouts. We also continue to make the preparations to have students voluntarily return for marching band and theatre. Our coaches and staff are taking extra precautions during these gatherings, including daily pre-screenings, smaller group gatherings, and social distancing. Click here for complete details on our Athletic Department’s Reopening Plan.

On a larger scale, our district administrators are working to address several areas of consideration for reopening schools for the 2020-2021 school year. Next week, we will be asking you, our families, students, and staff, to complete a short form that will be imperative for our planning. Your input during this process will be key in guiding our decision-making and so we kindly ask that you complete this form in a timely and thoughtful manner. Your partnership is important now and moving forward as we work under the current and changing circumstances to create an environment that is safe and comfortable in the fall. In addition to your input, we are consulting numerous national and local reports, guidance, and documents while collaborating with our fellow Berks County school districts to help shape our planning. Our final reopening plan will be presented publicly during our School Board Meeting on August 3 and will be shared via our website and district communication on August 4.

As we continue through this summer and school year, we will frequently communicate changes and updates via this Skylert platform and on the COVID-19 page on our website: www.governormifflinsd.org/covid-19. Please make sure that you log in to Skyward to update your contact information, as needed, at any time. We will be sending communications more frequently than past summers and throughout the school year. We recognize that increased communications can often be overlooked and ignored, but in the current climate we believe they are necessary and ask that you continue to stay informed of our planning and any changes or response that may be necessary. Now more than ever, it will also be extremely important that you complete this year’s online back-to-school update in Skyward in prior to the start of the school year. More information about that process will be sent in early August.

I thank you for continuing to do your part to protect our community!

Sincerely,

Dr. Steve Gerhard
Superintendent
Governor Mifflin School District
