Hello Governor Mifflin families,

Today, we learned that a student at Governor Mifflin High School has tested positive for COVID-19. Due to the number of potential contacts with this particular case, we have chosen to proactively close Governor Mifflin High School effective this evening at 6:00 p.m. with a tentative planned reopening of Monday, September 28.

Here are the facts regarding this case that are appropriate to share:

  • The student attends Governor Mifflin High School during the morning session of the hybrid schedule.
  • The student is rostered on a bus and is active in extracurricular activities.
  • A member of the student’s household took a rapid COVID-19 test on September 16 and received a positive test that day.
  • The student’s last day attending school in person was September 16 and we received notification of the student’s positive test results this afternoon.
  • We have sent a separate phone call and email to individuals who will be required to quarantine for 14 days.

In following our protocols, our district administrators have reported this to the PA Department of Health and are awaiting further advisement. In the interim, the specific circumstances of this case have resulted in a sizable number of students and staff members who will be required to quarantine due to potential close contact with this student. While state guidance provided to us does not require closure for this particular case, our administrators made the difficult decision to close our high school until Monday.

During this closure, it is expected that our students and staff will remain at home and avoid large gatherings that have the potential to put people’s health at risk and cause further disruption to our school day and daily lives. For the past several months, our entire Governor Mifflin staff has risen to the expectation of our community to reopen our schools while providing an enhanced online option. We now rely on all in our community to join us in taking the necessary preventative steps to avoid unnecessary potential exposure and follow closely the District’s Health and Safety Plan. As stated in my previous emails, our ability to remain open is the work of the masses and vulnerable to the few. We must remain strong in our health and safety practices to stay on track with our shared goal to provide consistent education in a safe and healthy environment for all.

Sincerely,

Dr. Steve Gerhard
Superintendent
Governor Mifflin School District
