LIFEGUARDING/CPR

GOVERNOR MIFFLIN LIFEGUARD TRAINING

Students must be 15 years or older to register. We teach American Red Cross Lifesaving. A pre-test of swimming skills will be given to determine if the student has the ability to pass the course. Standard first aid and CPR are required and will be included as part of this course.

LIFEGUARD RECERTIFICATION PROGRAM

This course is for people currently certified in lifeguard training that need to be re-certified. This course is renewable every two years. A current lifeguard training certification card must be shown to take this course.

LIFEGUARD RECERTIFICATION OPT OUT COURSE

This course is for people currently certified in lifeguard training that need to be re-certified and have re-certified before.  This course is renewable every two years.  A current lifeguard training certification card must be shown to take this course. Participants that choose to opt out will need to review Lifeguarding and CPR material prior to the course. Day of the course participants will test their swim, rescue, and CPR. After individual passes their skills they will be required to take the recertification exam. Participants will have to pass all three parts to receive their recertification

GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS: Lifeguard Recertification Program

o Individuals (Patrons, Participants, Lifeguards, and Supervisors) should complete a personal health assessment daily.

  • If your temperature is 100.4 or higher, individual is showing symptoms or is sick, stay home.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.
  • Adhere to school adopted plans if you begin to show symptoms.

o Regularly and thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.

  • Make sure to emphasize to all participants the importance of washing hands or using hand sanitizer before, during, and after facility usage.

o Schools are recommended to ensure that your facilities have been properly sanitized and have hand sanitizer and disposable masks readily available for practices and contests.

o Social distancing of at least 6 feet should be maintained at all times, where feasible.

o Individuals are required to wear face coverings in accordance with the Secretary of Health’s order on July 1st, 2020.

  • Everyone must wear a face covering, such as a mask, while in the facility and until the individual is the water.
  • Patrons are not required to wear face coverings while actively engaged in workouts and activities that prevent the wearing of face coverings, but must wear face coverings when on the pool, in the locker room facility, etc. and anytime 6 feet of social distancing is not possible.

Lifeguard Training course: Fee: $275 for resident; non-resident: $300

April 5th- May 3rd (Monday, Wednesday, & Saturday): Time 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.; Saturday’s: 9:00 am-12:00pm. *No class Saturday April 24th *

The purpose of the American Red Cross lifeguarding course is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies; and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services personnel take over.

Participants must be 15 years or older by the end of the course.  Students must attend all classes, pass all tests, and competently perform required skills in order to receive certification at the end of the course. Payment and attendance do not guarantee certification.  All classes are mandatory. Payment must be made at the first class or applicant will not be able to participate in the course.

Classes

  • All participants and instructor are required to wear face coverings in accordance with the Secretary of Health’s order on July 1st, 2020. Everyone must wear a face covering, such as a mask while in the facility, and until the individual is the water. Athletes are not required to wear face coverings while actively engaged in workouts and activities that prevent the wearing of face coverings, but must wear face coverings when on the pool deck, in the locker room facility, and anytime 6 feet of social distancing is not possible. Athletes should keep their masks on when they enter, are using, and leaving the locker rooms.
  • Instructors will be required to wear a mask at all times.
      • Classes: Monday, and Wednesday
        • Health screen 6:20 pm
        •  Course 6:30-9:30 pm
        • Pick-up 9:30-9:40 pm
      • Classes: Saturday
        • Health screen 8:50 am
        • Course 9:00 am- 12:00pm
        • Pick-up 12:00-12:10 pm

Health Screenings

  • All teachers and participants will enter and exit the facility via the pool side lobby entrance.
  • All athletes will complete a Health Screening prior to entering the facility.
    • Health Screenings will begin at 6:20 pm, or once a coach is present.
      • An instructor will conduct health screenings with each athlete individually before athlete is permitted in the facility.
      • Health Screenings will take place in the pool side lobby. Athletes will form a line starting in the vestibule and will enter the lobby to complete health screening.
      • All coaches and student athletes should be screened for signs/symptoms of COVID-19 prior to a training session, and prior to parent/guardian leaving campus. (see appendix for screening questionnaire)
      • Responses to screening questions should be recorded and stored.
      • Any person with positive symptoms reported should not be allowed to take part in workouts and should contact his or her primary care provider or other appropriate health-care professional.

Locker Room Policy

  • If the student is coming from home they should be arriving in their suit. If the student is coming from school or needs to change they are permitted to use the locker room.
  • There will be no storage of belongings in the locker room. The student should be bringing all belongings out of the locker room and placing it in the bleachers.
    • Students should be placing their belonging in the bleachers every 6 ft
    • There is blue tap in the bleachers to ensure the athletes are storing their items 6 apart.
  • In our locker room we can safely have 8 people in the locker room at one time utilizing the lockers that are marked off. Students can change after class, but most follow the 8-person limitation.

Hydration

  • Students must bring their own FILLED water bottle to training sessions.
  • If a Student shows up without at least one filled water bottle, they may not participate.
  • NO sharing of water bottles
  • No water fountains will be utilized.
  • Bottle filling station will be permitted. Student must have his own water bottle to fill.

Sanitization

  • Chlorine will sanitize the equipment used during practice.
  • We have QT plus that the coaching staff can utilize for any equipment that will not be used in the water.
  • Hand sanitizers are located throughout the facility for the coaches and athletes use.

Example of Covid Screening:

  • Have you been diagnosed with Covid-19?
  • Have you experienced symptoms of Covid-19?
  • Do you have a fever?
  • Do you have a cough?
  • Do you have a sore throat?
  • Have you experienced any loss in taste and/or smell?
  • Are you experiencing shortness of breath?
  • Have you had close contact, or cared for someone with Covid-19?
  • Does athlete have a filled water bottle with them to drink?
