This page explains the attendance procedures the district follows and provides guidance on the communication that needs to occur throughout the year as well as arrival and dismissal procedures. The safety and well-being of your child is extremely important and constant communication, especially as it pertains to changes in demographic information and custody orders when applicable, is essential.

Notify the school secretary, classroom teacher, or principal of any change to your address, telephone number, or other pertinent information including custody. The school must follow the custody order on file in the office. It is the parents’ responsibility to be sure that all contact information is correct and up-to-date.

Call the Mifflin Park School Office anytime at 610-898-1489 to report your child absent. To request homework, please try to call before 10:00 a.m. An automated call will go out daily to let you know your child is absent. Your accurate information and/or any changes to telephone numbers is extremely important. Also, please read below for information on the required documentation that must accompany all absences.

An excuse is needed for all absences.

When a student is absent from school for less than three days, the district requires that a written excuse be given to their teacher upon their return to school. State law requires a written excuse within three days of an absence. If no excuse is received, the absence will be considered unlawful.

The excuse should contain the following information:

    • The date the note is written
    • Student’s name
    • Date(s) of absence
    • Reason for absence
    • Parent/Guardian signature

When a student is absent for three or more consecutive days, a doctor’s note is required when the student returns to school. Please forward a doctor’s note to school within three days in order for the absence to be excused. Your physician may fax a note to the school.  Mifflin Park’s fax number is: 610-898-0635. If a doctor’s note is not received, the absence will be considered unlawful.

Under Pennsylvania Law, students are allowed three days of unlawful absence before any legal action is taken by the school district. After the third day, the district is required to file a “First Notice of Unlawful Absence,” which officially notifies the parent that subsequent unlawful absences could subject them to legal action and a possible fine.

An accumulation of absences, regardless of excuse, could result in a violation of the compulsory attendance laws and result in a citation at the district justice level. Doctors’ notes may be required for all absences if a student is excessively absent from school. Parents will be notified when doctors’ excuses are required.

When you know your child/children will be absent from school due to an upcoming event or a pre-planned trip, we ask that you please fill out a special form we have for this purpose. This form is entitled“Request for Excused Absence From School For a Pre-planned Educational Tour or Trip.”

If there is more than one child in a family, from more than one building, only one form needs to be completed and returned to the oldest child’s principal ten days before the trip. We can send this form home with your child upon request or you can download it here:

>> Download the “Request for Excused Absence” form here.

This form must then be approved by the building principal(s) and the assistant superintendent. You will receive a response in the mail from Mr. Wolf as to whether the absence is approved or not.

The School District will approve educational trips up to a maximum of five school days per student per school year. Any days beyond five will be considered unlawful absences. No trip will be approved for excused absences after the trip has been taken. Trips taken during the district’s assessment window (e.g. PSSA’s) will not be approved.

Parents may drop off children their children in the designated area in the Mifflin Park parking lot. For safety, have all children exit your vehicle using the car doors on the right. A crossing guard will be present to assist children in crossing the bus lane. Your patience during this time is appreciated. Please do not pass in the parking lot.

After 8:45 a.m., parents must bring children into the office in order to sign them in. Parents must present a written excuse or doctor’s excuse to the secretary at that time.

Parents or guardians must come into the office in order to sign out and meet their child. Children should bring a note to the teacher on the morning of the day they are leaving early.

Parents who will be picking up their child at the end of the school day must communicate with the teacher and/or office. Parents must send a note to the teacher that indicates who may pick up the child. Any/all changes to the protocol you initially establish must be communicated with the office and classroom teacher. At dismissal, parents must get out of their car and wait at the designated exits.
